Well, yesterday was a three steps forward...two steps back kind of day.

FT wasn't booting properly so I reseated the ribbon cables and got it to behave.  In the meantime though the DMD driver board seems to be heading south on it.  Adam is loaning me a board for the party so hopefully FT is set.

Waterworld would fire up, but it wouldn't start a game or get into the diags.  I fumbled around for awhile and eventually decided to check the fuses near the transformer.  Sure enough the fuse that controls the switches is blowing shortly after power on.  I researched the problem and replaced the BR for that fuse, but it's still blowing.  Next step seems to be to replace the 33000 uF 35 V capacitor, but I don't have one of those handy.  Anybody got a spare?  LOL

Strange Science had some lights that wouldn't work even with good bulbs so it was time to replace some SCRs.  No problem there since I've done it before several times on these 6803 titles.  While I was on a roll I decided to try and figure out why the left flipper is a little weak.  After no less than three coil changes and various other tweaks there's still no joy.  The game played better before I started trying to futz with it.  Hopefully when I put the coil it started with back in today it will go back to just "normal" weakness where you can just almost make the right ramp.

I hadn't dug into Whitewater for quite a while since it was playing fine.  Upon lifting the field I was horrified to find that there was no tilt bob!  I had forgotten that I pulled it out the last time I played Dr. Frankenstein with this title to pass it on to the owner of my non-keeper.  Since at least two of the attendees are well known for their "shake and bake" style of play, it just won't do to not have a tilt bob.  LOL  I didn't have any spare B/W tilt mech parts around, so I've moved some of the parts out of Bone Busters Inc to make due.

Besides the Strange Science coil, other things on the agenda today are the sound board on Tommy (has the extra loud buzz issue) and one of the goal targets on World Challenge Soccer is stuck closed.  Who knows what surprises await after that, but I'm still enjoying having the time to tinker.  I'll just need to take next week off to rest up from my "vacation".  LOL

Ah, that's right I forgot your family was wanting to get into the games.  Now I understand why you're going after these unloved titles.  LOL

I'm guessing these two will have other homes before long so a temp swap might not work out as well, but we can talk about it at the party.

Yes they are lightning flips, the lighting from above makes it hard to tell I think..but they are...I actually had standard green flippers and yellow rubber before but the flipper bat broke in like a week, so I went back to lightning. I really don't think it makes much difference, you still need to make your shots either way...
I watched the video again to try and learn a few things.  It seemed to help somewhat because for the first time in a long time I got the second Jackpot, but still didn't break 100 mil that game.  I have to disagree that the lightning bolt flippers don't make much difference.  For me anyway they change the angles significantly.  You are right that you still have to make the shots, but if you're used to one type of flipper and find yourself on a game with the other type you'll need to make some "muscle memory" adjustments.  I think I read or heard somewhere that the standard flippers have more flex in them so maybe that's what is really making the angles change.  Also, depending on how tight the tilt is set, you'll lose more balls down the middle with lightning bolt flippers since the gap is 1/4" wider.  It's hard to describe, but when I play this title with standard flippers the shots just don't feel as "natural".  I guess it could just be the muscle memory thing.

I just watched some of it one more time, and I'm curious about a few things.  Key word curious...not trying to put your score or settings down or anything like that.

The first ball was plunged at the 6 second mark and drains at the 16 second mark but the ball save helps you out.  Are you using the default ball save time?  Again, I'm just curious about it.  I really don't like ball saves at all and turn all of them off whenever I can.  I was double checking my settings to get ready for the party and noticed that my ball save on FT was set at 4 seconds.  I tried to move it down and found out that 4 seconds is the lowest you can go.

On the plunge after the ball save, you nail the first lock and the next ball comes out of the lock instead of from the trough and you nail the second lock.  Clearly you don't have a problem hitting the lock from either angle, but do you happen to know which setting controls that and is it a choice you consciously made for some reason?  I kind of like getting that callout from the reel unloading so I think I'm gonna change away from the default on whatever setting controls holding the balls in the reel.

On my game after you get the three balls locked, the single drop target pops up so you have to knock it down to qualify the first jackpot.  Yours didn't seem to do this until you scored the first two jackpots.  You hit the shot to qualify the third jackpot, but shortly after that your great first multiball came to an end.  Again, do you know which setting controls that and was it a conscious decision?  I seem to really have a hard time hitting the lock area when more than one ball is in play.  Not having to knock that drop target down to qualify the first two jackpots might help out my wimpy scores.  LOL

I had the same question Robert did about whether you were using lightning bolt flippers, so I used the search function to see if you had mentioned them before.  I came across a post where you said your buddy's FT was brutal.  Can you give more details on why his game is harder for you to do well on?

I hope my curiousity doesn't upset you.  I'm really just trying to learn more about the fine details.  One reason I think I need to pay more attention to this type of thing is that I'm planning to go to PAPA for the first time next year.  I need to learn to spot differences like these to adjust my play style on the fly if I'm going to have any chance to do well there since I know in a lot of cases, the settings used there are not going to be what I'm used to.

Right there with you,   Have a Maverick for under $900.00 and a Party Animal for $500.00 coming
this week.
First Maverick and now Party Animal?   Man Victor, you're starting to stock up on some of these odd games I've wanted to play real examples of.  We're gonna need to work out a temp swap program!  LOL

Anytime Ray,

Just such a good value on some of these titles, I just couldn't pass them up.  Plus the fact my brother
and sisters are wanting a Pinball machine now.  Hmmm  go figure.

PS,
Told yall I wasn't limited to just "A" title Pins. Cool

Regards...

Congratulations.  I played Roller Games on pinmame and it's got some really cool shots.
+1

I had a chance to pick one up a few years ago.  I remember liking the gameplay a lot on pinmame, but the the soundtrack was a bit too much for me.  Seems like the one I was considering was more like $800...for $500 I might have gone for it anyway.

Congrats!

Good deal.  Post some pics!  I've played a few at the auctions, and thought it was a fun title.  It's funny that they sold advertising space on the playfield. Uh oh, did I just give Stern an idea?

I haven't done it since......that should say something. I also made score keeping score WAY to complicated and time consuming...
